Kelcy Warren’s Deal Making Fueled Energy Transfer’s Rise
Some of the biggest moves in Kelcy Warren’s career happened fast. When Energy Transfer had a narrow window to close its purchase of Louis Dreyfus Highbridge Energy’s natural gas liquids assets in March 2011, Warren called an emergency board meeting on a Friday night, pitched the two billion dollar deal, won approval, then announced it the moment markets opened. That single transaction gave the company its first real foothold in natural gas liquids, a business Enterprise Products had dominated up to that point.
Building a Diversified Pipeline
The Louis Dreyfus purchase was hardly the only deal Kelcy Warren pushed through during that stretch. The Southern Union acquisition later in 2011 cost 7.9 billion dollars and brought the Trunkline pipeline into the fold, later re-engineered into part of the Dakota Access system. In 2012, Energy Transfer bought Sunoco, a purchase that diversified its hydrocarbon streams and planted a flag in the Marcellus. Warren describes the shift from natural gas company to multi-stream operator as something close to a hedge. “In some ways it was a hedge,” he says, noting that when natural gas liquids prices rise, gas prices often fall, and the reverse holds too.
More recent deals carried the same logic forward. The 2021 purchase of Enable Midstream opened access to Oklahoma’s Anadarko Basin and the Haynesville, while the 2023 Lotus Midstream deal finally gave Kelcy Warren the Cushing link he had wanted for years, letting the company move liquids from Cushing to Midland to the Gulf Coast. “I’ve always been envious of those able to move liquids from Cushing to Midland to the Gulf Coast,” he says. “Now, we’ve solved that problem.” Two additional acquisitions closed in 2022 alone, part of a run that helped push annual revenue toward ninety billion dollars. Taken together, the deals reflect a pattern Kelcy Warren returns to often in interviews: buy the asset that solves a specific bottleneck for producers, then let the pipeline network do the rest.
